Fox's Newest Casualties: Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Last Man on Earth Cancelled

Over the years, Fox has developed a reputation for cancelling well-received shows in order to make room for new shows on its schedule. A rather infamous Family Guy bit involves protagonist Peter Griffin listing off the twenty-nine shows that were cancelled in the three years between Family Guy's own cancellation and revival. Family Guy made that joke in 2005, around thirteen years ago, and yet the joke is still relevant today.

Fox announced the cancellation of three shows in particular recently: The Mick, The Last Man on Earth, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The reasoning, they claim, is to make room for more shows in the upcoming fall lineup, as all three shows have suffered low ratings. Brooklyn Nine-Nine's cancellation has received noticeable backlash online, and celebrities such as Lin-Manuel Miranda have talked about their disappointment.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been a critical darling since its inception in 2013, but its ratings have been in decline, with the fifth season being the lowest at just two million viewers per episode. Given the show's freefalling ratings, it isn't much surprise as to why Fox would give it the axe, but with the backlash, the show proves it still has a solid fanbase.

The Last Man on Earth has also seen some backlash, notably from fans such as Seth Myers and its own cast members. The series was never able to climb out of its niche category, and now that it has been cancelled, it likely never will. The Mick hasn't seen as much outpouring of support, but fans of Kaitlin Olsen's work, notably on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are disappointed nonetheless.

There are rumors circulating as to whether these shows can be saved, such as transferring from cable television to streaming services such as Hulu, but rumors such as these always end up spreading when a beloved but poorly-rated TV show winds up cancelled. It has happened before, to be sure, but only time will tell if these shows will be saved.
