Suicide Squad Annual #1 Leads to Suicide Squad Black?

Things get weird for the Suicide Squad as DC comics switches up the roster for the new version of the team. During Suicide Squad Annual #1, Amanda Waller has built a new Squad while the main team we're all familiar with is out dealing with Atlantis.

The mission for the new Squad is to hunt down fellow Belle Reve inmate Cadence Laramie as she's currently going on a killing spree due to a horrendous procedure that had her surgically attached to an unnamed male. During the procedure, we see that the man die however Laramie survives with the ability, it seems, to summon demons. With her escape, Waller is forced to send a makeshift team to retrieve her.

The team consists of Scream Queen, Shimmer, Baby Boom, Rag Doll, Tao Jones, Skorpio, and Merlyn. And in case you're wondering, yes, it's the comic counterpart of Malcolm Merlyn from the Arrowverse, just without the sinking a neighbourhood story.

When coming close to capturing Laramaie, the team runs across Swamp Thing. Battling both Swamp Thing and the demons prove too much as only Merlyn and Shatter survive, retreating back to Belle Reve only for Shatter's head to be blown off for not following orders. As for Merlyn, he survived and due to his popularity gained through the Arrowverse, is it too far-fetched that DC could have larger plans for him in the upcoming issues of the Squad?

Suicide Squad Annual #1 is written by Cullen Bunn with art by Ronan Cliquet.
