This year's surprise hit, The Meg, is getting a sequel. The film, starring Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson, saw a team of oceanographers attempt to stop a megalodon shark after accidentally awakening it from the Mariana Trench. It was also based on a book by Steve Alten and released in 1997.
The Meg grossed $500 million worldwide over its run, an impressive return given its original $150 million budget. Gravity Pictures, the Chinese film company that served as distributor and producer of the movie, confirmed that the movie will be getting a sequel soon. Catherine Xunjun Ying, the film's producer, has confirmed this; when asked about the possibility of a sequel, she responded, "That's the plan," and added that the sequel was in "the very early stages." At this stage, the projects has not been officially greenlit by Warner Bros. just yet, but Gravity Pictures is already set on turning The Meg into its own franchise, complete with a Meg themed amusement park in China. Producer Belle Avery has also purchased the rights to the rest of the book series and expressed excitement at the idea of adapting the other books.
Some have expressed thoughts about where the sequel will go in terms of spectacle. The first movie cut out most of its violence and gore to maintain a market-friendly PG-13 rating, against the wishes of Jason Statham. Or perhaps the series will get more creative with its creature designs, which is something the books will allow it to do. Given that the sequel hasn't fully materialized yet, we can only wait to see if or how The Meg 2 outdoes its predecessor.
